Horse Tales originated in the fall of 2102 when students in EKU’s LIB 3015 service learning course, under the direction of Dr. Delinda Dent, partnered with the Kentucky Horse Park to create a unique learning resource for visitors to the Children’s Barn. With assistance from EKU’s Libraries’ Learning Resources Center, students utilized free resources to produce digital stories about each of the horses residing at the Park. The stories combined narration, photos and copyright-friendly media and music, and were displayed at the Children’s Barn,
available through a QR code or touch screen on each horse’s stall.
From there the project expanded under the guidance of EKU’s Dr. Ralph Turner and Dr. Delinda Dent to allow greater connectivity and
collaboration and to provide added outlets for student creativity. The website was developed and is being maintained by our site’s
Webmaster, Kelly Fischer, an EKU LMS graduate and school media librarian at Dixie Magnet Elementary School. All submissions must be sent to her for inclusion on the site.
The service learning of Horse Tales fosters not only improvements in key academic skills but also increased knowledge of one of Kentucky’s vital agricultural industries.
